Utah - Winter Sports ... and Software

General overview

Named after a Native American tribe named Ute, meaning "people of the mountains", Utah is generally known for its ski resorts that and its Mormon community. With a population of approximately 2 700 000 people, Utah is located in Western United States. Utah’s capital is Salt Lake City, host of the Olympic Games in 2002 and it is well known for its average heavy snowfall which reaches 500 inches. Utah’s economy is based on mining and tourism. Lately a lot of software and generally IT related companies have chosen to establish their offices in Utah. A multinational giant with 100 offices worldwide is Novell, leader in software solutions. Another example is Omniture, a leader in website optimization. Microsoft, Hewett Packard or Apple are few of the companies which either have started in Utah or intend to open an important branch in Utah. It is said that Utah is becoming one of the ideal locations to start a family considering facts as career opportunities and low criminal rate.

Skiing and trekking in Utah

Winter tourism is one of the major revenue generators in Utah. Salt Lake City, Ogden, Park City and Provo are the most famous locations in Utah for winter sports. People from all over the United States of America chose Canyons Resort, Deer Valley Ski Resort or Park City Ski Resort as holiday destination for skiing and snowboarding. Apart from skiing or snowboarding there are other interesting outdoors activities one could do in Utah: take a ride on a snowmobile or try snow tubing. Breathtaking landscapes, result of a harsh semi dessert and arid climate, attract tourists not only in winter season but also all year long. Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park provide a fantastic journey to adventurers. The largest discovered natural bridge in the world, Rainbow Bridge, was carved of solid sandstone and it’s located in southern Utah. Thanks to its diverse environment Utah is definitely a perfect destination for hikers, mountain trekkers or campers. With a history of more than 250 000 years, Bear Lake is situated at the border of Utah with Idaho being famous as the habitat of unique spices. Northern Utah is dominated by Great Salt Lake, the largest slated lake in the Northern hemisphere.

Entertainment and cultural attractions

Used as a shooting location for dozens of films, Utah proved itself to be an extremely inspiring location for the film industry. For legendary films like El Dorado, Wild Wild West or Pirates of the Caribbean Utah have been chosen as shooting location. Its extraterrestrial surroundings have been used as background for productions such as Planet of the Apes (1968) and Planet of the Apes (2001). Natural History Museum of Utah will take you to an unimaginable journey to the past where you will find answers from weather to dinosaurs and DNA. A winter destination, Utah is hosting major events in the winter season: Utah Winter Games, Hof Winterfest German Festival, St. George Winter Bird Festival held in January or Bryce Canyon Winter Festival and Park City - Ski Jumping held in February.
