Gym Etiquette – hygiene and respect

Gym Etiquette – hygiene and respect

Even though there is no specific code of ethics to follow while you are in the gym, you must respect the others by just following some unwritten gym etiquette rules that will keep you out of critique and sometimes out of troubles. However, due to some unbearable situations and behaviors, some gyms have set a “do not” list describing things one should not do while in the gym. Being a public shared place, gym gathers people with different education and background giving opportunities everybody in achieving a healthy life. Hygiene and respect for the others are two principles one should take into account when joining a gym class. To help you distinguish the basic rules gym etiquette requires, just try to avoid situations as those described below.

Basic hygiene rules required by gym etiquette

As already mentioned, hygiene is one of the most important rules one have to follow according to gym etiquette. If you have used a machine and your sweat is spread everywhere, use a clean towel to wipe it out before going to another machine.

Another rule you will have to follow as per the gym etiquette is to take care of your own corporal hygiene. For this, use clean clothes and if you smell bad, just take a shower before starting to work out. Use deodorants or sprays to avoid critical looks. Also, no casual wear is allowed. No jeans and no jean shorts may be used during your work out.

Another critical aspect you have to take into consideration according to gym etiquette is to use clean shoes before entering the gym area. As a piece of advice, try to have a pair of proper sport shoes dedicated to this activity, so that you don’t have to worry every time and check if your shoes are clean.

Gym etiquette and respect for the others

Being a public place, according to gym etiquette you will have to show respect for the others and adopt a proper attitude while working out. Swearing and bad language can distract others and can also be annoying, so try to control your instincts. Other annoying sounds can be made by cell phones. Unless absolutely necessary, keep you phone cell on silent mode as it can really distract people trying to test their limits with a difficult exercise, or furthermore it can lead to accidents. Another annoying sound related to weight exercises is made by some individuals who are dropping the weights after finishing a certain exercise. This behavior could also lead to accidents as there is a chance for the weight to bounce up and lead to injuries. Another proof of respect, not only for the other participants to a gym session but also for the employees of the gym, is to put back the weights after finishing an exercise. As a general rule, try and follow the basic principles of cleaning and organization of the place. According to gym etiquette, flirting is not a proper behavior while working out so leave men and women focus on their exercises; if you cannot control your instincts just wait for the right time and take a brake whet the opportunity occurs. .
